Within the songs that Green Day delivered, including “American Idiot,” “Longview,” “St. Jimmy,” “Brain Stew” and “Christie Road,” were structures as old as Iggy Pop. Just as Bob Dylan borrowed and stole melodies and riffs from foundational folkies and bluesmen, Green Day’s output is filled with the accumulated sounds and ideas of punk rock in total: Here’s a Clash riff from 1977, there’s an extension of the Stooges, and tucked within four neat bars are replicas of “Milo Goes to College”-era Descendents.
Live review: Green Day burns through the Echoplex
Yeah, but let’s be real — this band will never be as good as they were in 1993. I am astonished Green Day still makes music. It’s depressing. (And I used to be horribly obsessed with them as a tween.)
